In this practical workshop, internationally-acclaimed theatre-makers Sarah Argent and Kevin Lewis will share aspects of their process of making small plays for audiences of small people (from 6 month old babies upwards).

Aiming to be comic, poetic, surreal and moving explorations of the world of childhood, sometimes using verbatim the words of young children, their work has regularly drawn comparisons with Beckett, Chekhov and Pinter.

Sarah Argent
Sarah is a theatre-maker, specialising in work for the very young. She has been commissioned to create and direct productions for theatre companies across the UK, Ireland and beyond, including Polka Theatre, the National Theatre, Unicorn Theatre, Derby Theatre, and Theatre Hullabaloo (England); Welsh National Opera, Sherman Theatre, Theatr Clwyd (Wales); Haya Cultural Centre, (Amman, Jordan); Barnstorm Theatre (Kilkenny, Ireland); and Companyia Frec a Frec (Barcelona).

She is an Associate Artist of Cardiff-based Theatr Iolo, for whom, between 2001 and 2018, she developed many projects, including all the company’s work for the under fives.

Kevin Lewis
Kevin has been a theatre director and actor for over 40 years, mainly working in theatre for young audiences. For 27 of these years, he was Artistic Director of Theatr Iolo, prior to leaving in 2018 to pursue a freelance career as an actor, clown and director. During his time with the company, he directed over 60 productions which toured extensively and garnered awards in Wales and beyond.

Together, Sarah and Kevin create theatre for babies under 18 months old. Their productions for this age have been performed at Polka and Unicorn Theatres, throughout the UK, in Australia (Sydney Opera House & Arts Centre Melbourne), and India.
