A message from Polly Simmonds,
Head of Creative Learning
Dear Teacher,
In 2020 Polka ran a fully-funded creative writing and literacy pilot called Write Here Write Now , a project that explored and tested the process of using creative arts to improve literacy levels in Primary School children. More than ever before, children need inspiring creative experiences to help them make sense of their fast-changing world. Children today face all kinds of challenges, and for those who struggle with literacy, drama can help to bridge the attainment gap . Following the pilot, teachers told us that over 80% of children have shown an increased level of confidence, imagination and creativity and 90% of the children agreed the project had helped with their story writing skills . |
“Since the start of the project, I have seen a noticeable improvement in the children’s confidence in class. Pupils feel safe to express themselves and share their ideas willingly. I have seen an increase in their imagination and creativity when writing, including using a wider range of vocabulary during free writing.” Year 3 teacher – Benedict Primary School
“The Polka practitioners are very experienced and have delivered their sessions (face to face and online) in a way that is child friendly, engaging and has been filled with excellent practical ideas that I will be able to use in my future lessons to support writing” Year 3 teacher – Sherwood Primary School
“It was brilliant and really allowed the kids to flourish and be more confident in themselves and their abilities.” Year 3 teacher – Malmesbury Primary School
Following the success of the pilot, we have managed to secure funding to run the project in 2021. We have now started the process of selecting schools to take part.
