“For the past 35 years, Polka has been a pioneer in creating inspirational, unforgettable theatre for children in an environment where they, and their imaginations, can run free. We work with the best writers and artists in the UK to produce world-class theatre for over 90,000 children and families every year. We want every child to experience live theatre and benefit from the creative learning activities we offer. We make every effort to ensure all our work is accessible to children with special educational needs and those from disadvantaged areas of the community.
Polka holds a special place in the hearts and minds of all those who come here. For many children, Polka is where theatre begins. Thank you in advance for helping us continue to introduce the wonders of live theatre to new generations of children and their families.”
Artistic Director & Joint CEO, Polka Theatre
Ticket sales account for only a third of what we need to keep our doors open and our programme of inspiring productions for children and creative learning activities alive. As a registered charity, we need to raise a further £300,000+ each year.
For babies to early teens, your support helps us every year to provide:
- 6 new theatre productions
- Creative learning activities
- 1000s of tickets and subsidised access for disadvantaged audiences
- A rich schools programme
- Freefalling – for children at risk of social exclusion
- Integrated Sign Language, Relaxed and Audio Described performances and workshops
- Free activities and play spaces
In 2019 we will undertake a major development of our theatre. To see our plans and the various ways you can support visit the FUTURE POLKA page.
Make a Donation to Polka
As a registered charity and one of the few theatres dedicated to inspiring children, we rely on donations from our supporters to reach over 90,000 children, their teachers and families every year.
Leave a Legacy
Legacies and ‘In Memory’ gifts from those whose children or friends in the community have benefited from their unforgettable experiences at Polka theatre, have had a profound impact on our work in recent years.
Your gift will provide ongoing support for our current programme and help ensure our future. It will mean we can support the next generation of artists and invest in a much-needed redevelopment of our building and play spaces, so tomorrow’s children can also be inspired by live theatre.

To leave a legacy to Polka
If you would like further information, or you are interested in leaving a gift to Polka in your will, please do let us know. We would like to have the chance to thank you and keep you updated about our plans for the future.
As Polka Theatre is a registered charity, no inheritance tax is payable on the amount of your gift. As of 2013, if you leave 10% or more of your residuary estate to charity, this will reduce the rate of inheritance tax from 40% to 36% charged to the taxable beneficiaries. There are tax implications in leaving the residue of your estate between charitable and non-charitable beneficiaries; for further information please consult a professional will adviser.

Payroll and Matched Giving
Payroll Giving is a tax-efficient way for employees to support Polka. It is a flexible scheme which allows any UK taxpayer to give regularly and on a tax free basis. Payroll Giving donations are deducted before tax so each £1.00 you give will only cost you 80p, and if you’re a higher rate tax payer it will only cost you 60p. When adopted by a company as part of its CSR or philanthropy programme, such as Charity of the Year, Payroll Giving can support the long term sustainability of the charity.
Many hundreds of companies will also support their employees by doubling or matching a portion of their charitable donations.
It is quick and easy to set up Payroll Giving. Click here to visit the HMRC website for more information.
Please speak to your employer, or Human Resources department, if you would like to donate to Polka via Payroll Giving or to see if your company will match your donations.
Trusts and Foundations
Trusts and Foundations
Our mission is to light up the imagination in every child. As one of the of the only UK venues dedicated to children from babies to early teens, Polka is uniquely positioned to create and champion world-class theatre as a vital source of inspiration for young audiences.
For 35 years, Polka has been a leader in its field. We create 6 new productions every year and have developed ways to reduce barriers, so as many children as possible can experience live theatre and associated creative learning activities. Polka helped to pioneer Relaxed performances for those on the autistic spectrum and thousands of children have experienced live performances for the first time through our award-winning Curtain Up! programme, which provides free tickets and transport subsidies to schools in disadvantaged areas.
Polka is active in the local community. We work with schools, libraries, children’s and community centres. Our programmes use drama, story-telling and theatre skills to support the development of children, including those at risk of social exclusion and those with Special Educational Needs.
Why we need your support
As a National Portfolio Organisation, Polka receives funding from the Arts Council, as well as the London Borough of Merton. We generate over a third of our income from ticket sales, but we need to raise a further £300,000+ every year in private funding.
We rely heavily on the donations we receive towards this target from grant-giving organisations. Funding from Trusts and Foundations helps ensure we can continue to create exceptional theatre for children, develop new writing and artistic talent, reach and engage children from all backgrounds, support creative learning and schools partnerships and our extensive community engagement programme.
